The Most Joyful Festivals in Myanmar

Myanmar has a variety of festivals in each month.

Thingyan (Country- wide)


The festival is usually held on 13th April to 17th April through out with the country. During this time, people carry water guns or buckets and pipes to play any one seen on the streets. Youths go out for enjoyment while elders take retreat in monasteries and pagodas to perform meritorious deeds.



Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival (Inlay Lake)


The holy images of the Buddha from Phaung Daw Oo pagoda are placed on a decorated royal barge called Karaweik (Mythical Bird) and towed by leg-rowers stopping at each village to let people pay homage. People mostly focus on the gazette holidays which are full of peak activities. The festival is held on 1st waxing moon day of Thadingyut (Sept) with great magnificence and pageantry. Funfairs and dances are also held. Shan traditional boat races are participated by leg-rowers of both men and women dressed in their national costumes.


Taungyi hot-air balloon festival (Taungyi)

Taung Gyi

The Taungyi hot-air balloon competition is one of the most popular festivals in Myanmar during cold season. Traditionally this balloon raising ceremony is to pay homage to Sulamuni pagoda said to be in the abode of the celestial beings by sending up lighted hot air balloons. The festival is also a competition for the most elaborated and decorated hot air balloons. The hot-air balloons are made up of hand-made paper beautifully designed with colorful fire-works and firecrackers.
